ARIA guidelines

The initiative "Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma" (ARIA) has been set up in cooperation with the WHO, in order to determine the most appropriate treatment, and to establish the connection between hay fever and asthma. The initiative is based on the concept of "one airway, one disease", meaning that allergic inflammations are not limited to the nose, but can occur in the lower airways as well. The recommendations are as follows:

  • Long-term hay fever sufferers should always additionally be examined for asthma.
  • Patients with bronchial asthma should be tested for hay fever.
  • The medication used to treat these complaints should be safe, effective, and suitable for treating diseases of both the upper and lower airways.
